The Orokonui Challenge will take place on 30 November 2024 at the Orokonui Ecosanctuary in Waitati, Dunedin. This off-road event features a course that begins near the visitor centre carpark and follows a scenic route along the Orokonui fence line and the stunning coastline from Pūrākaunui to Doctors Point. Participants will traverse a variety of terrains, including compacted gravel, grass, beach, asphalt, and coarse gravel, with a total elevation change of approximately 600 meters.
The course offers unique views of the Orokonui inlet and culminates with a climb through the sanctuary’s protected forest, providing an immersive experience in New Zealand’s natural environment. Notably, all proceeds from the event are directed towards supporting Orokonui’s wildlife advocacy and conservation efforts. This integration of physical challenge and environmental stewardship adds a significant dimension to the race, making it not just a test of endurance but also a contribution to local biodiversity efforts.
