Mt Somers itself is an ancient rhyolite dome volcano, located at the western edge of the Canterbury Plains. The northern and southern aspects of the mountain are characterized by steep rhyolite cliffs, which contrast with the lush beech forests and tussock landscapes found on its east and west sides. This variety in terrain adds to the challenging nature of the event.
