The Mauao King & Queen of the Mountain is set to return to Mount Maunganui for its 78th year on 27 April 2025, under the organization of Athletics Tauranga. This event caters to a wide range of participants, from families to elite runners.
The course for the senior race involves a run along the beach, a climb to the summit of Mauao, a descent, and a return run along the beach. There is also a junior race (U14) that runs partway up Mauao to the tree/bush-line and back.
The race commences and concludes on the Mount Main Surf Beach, directly opposite Mt Drury near Leisure Island/Moturiki Island.
Notably, this event is an affiliate of World Mountain Running, making it the sole affiliated race in the Oceania Region.
